MD Theatre Guide: Mack, Beth

Does the curse of the Scottish play still apply when the play is stylized “Mack (comma) Beth”? If the audience’s reception is any indication, I would say no. Keegan Theatre has shown once again its talent for bringing together meaningful works of storytelling and exceptional artistic talent. Directed by Matt Ripa, this play is a beautiful collaboration between two amazing staples of DC theatre: The Rose Theatre and The Keegan Theatre.

“Macbeth” is a play that scorches you, no matter how many times you see it, because of how recognizable the emotions of the characters are. Ambition, Anger, Brutality, Cruelty. All terrible, but all human.  “Mack, Beth” comes from an even more recognizable place, however, uncomfortable that truth is.  In this way, this play serves as an interesting and welcome bridge between the modern and the early modern worlds.
