PRESS RELEASE: The Weir

The Keegan Theatre Assembles Stellar, Acclaimed Cast for Conor McPherson’s THE WEIR

January 20, 2011—The Keegan Theatre opens Conor McPherson’s chilling and lyrical play THE WEIR on February 12 at Church Street Theater.

THE WEIR, called “beautiful and devious” by The New York Times, will be directed by four-time Helen Hayes nominee and Keegan Artistic Director Mark A. Rhea and will feature company members and Helen Hayes nominees David Jourdan, Kevin Adams, Susan Marie Rhea, and Jon Townson, along with Mick Tinder (Faith Healer, Golden Boy, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, 1776).

We’re packing The Weir with heavy hitters,” says Rhea. “I cast this show with experienced company members who have rich backgrounds in Irish work, actors who I knew would understand the roles almost on a cellular level.”

The cast of THE WEIR are no strangers to the stage or to Irish theater, with 15 Ireland tours, 5 Helen Hayes nominations, and dozens of roles in Irish works between them.

THE WEIR is not only a delicate and brilliant script, it is the type of work at which Keegan excels. “I couldn’t be more excited about what audiences will experience with this script, on this stage, with these special performers,” Rhea continues.

The Keegan Theatre’s connection to Ireland and Irish theater is well recognized – since its founding, the company has produced more than 20 Irish works – and is highlighted by the company’s annual Ireland tour.

“Anytime we approach an Irish play, our pulse quickens a bit,” says Rhea. “Simply put: it’s our first and greatest love, and something that Keegan has a history of doing exceptionally well. Thanks to the annual tour to Ireland, we have a close relationship with Irish artists, and a deep, hands-on appreciation of Irish culture and history, as well as a familiarity and comfort level in approaching these plays.”

Church Street’s brick-walled intimacy provides a perfect venue for McPherson’s quietly moving – and turns both touching and funny – portrait of the dark and guarded corners of the human heart. Don’t miss what promises to be one of the highlights of the season.
