Keegan PLAY-RAH-KA Announces Virtual Summer Camps for K-5th Graders

Virtual Summer Camps

13 Weeks Starting June 1 — Morning, Afternoon, and Full Day Sessions Available!

May 21, 2020: The Keegan Theatre’s brand for young people and families, Keegan PLAY-RAH-KA (PRK), is moving online for the summer! In an effort to help young people stay engaged with their creative selves and their peers without sacrificing health and safety, PRK is launching 13 weeks of virtual summer camps starting June 1. Students will enjoy the opportunity to work with PRK teaching artists to build their own skills and create with their peers in focused morning and afternoon sessions. Registration is available for any combination of weeks, from 1 to all 13, and each week features a new theme to help keep the fun fresh and exciting all summer long.

“Over the course of the spring, through our variety of popular online classes, we’ve learned that the best way to transition to online programming is to thoughtfully design curriculum for this unique virtual moment, to embrace the technology for childrens’ creative benefit,” explains Alexis J. Hartwick, Keegan’s Director of Education and Administration. “Though we are all at home, we can still imagine we can go to other places with our friends. That is the magic of theatre! Additionally, our summer camps are now more accessible than ever, with many students joining us from across the country and our teaching artists actively adapting to each child and their needs throughout our live classes.”

Students will explore a new theme each week, from “Animal Tales” to “Travels in Time” to “the Olympics” and more. Morning sessions include exploration of the week’s theme through games, music, and movement, all exercises that help build each student’s “Actor’s Tool Box.” Then in the afternoon, students will use the week’s theme as a prompt as they create their own world through costume and set design, creative writing, and role playing. Younger students who may not be writing yet will listen and interact with a variety of stories and related activities. Each week ends with a sharing of the “(Zoom) Show” the students have created together.

Students can participate in just morning or afternoon sessions or register for the full day experience, which includes both sessions plus extension activities to do on break and between the two sessions. PRK even offers to prepare all materials for the week’s activities and send them to your home for an additional fee.

PRK is currently offering a 10% discount when registering for 2 or more weeks, so visit www.keegantheatre.com/playrahka for information and to register online. Also on the website, find bios for PRK teaching artists and more information on what Keegan PLAY-RAH-KA is all about.
