PRESS RELEASE: Basra Boy

The Keegan Theatre Presents WORLD PREMIERE of Rosemary Jenkinson’s BASRA BOY

January 30, 2011—The Keegan Theatre is thrilled to present the world premiere of Rosemary Jenkinson’s BASRA BOY, opening February 19 at Church Street Theater.

BASRA BOY is directed by Abigail Isaac, who co-directed the Helen Hayes Recommended DANCING AT LUGHNASA at Keegan last season.  A one-man tour de force, BASRA BOY features Josh Sticklin in his Keegan Theatre debut.  Sticklin plays all the characters in Jenkinson’s  comic and moving script, a thrilling challenge for actor and director alike.

This play speaks to me on many levels,” says Isaac.  “It’s about Belfast, our troubled youth, our attitudes toward the war in the Middle East.  But the core of this play is a fascinating story of friendship, a story that is uniquely poignant, I think, because one actor portrays both friends.”

BASRA BOY will share the Church Street space with Keegan’s production of THE WEIR, which opens on February 12.  BASRA BOY will run on Saturdays at 3 pm and 5 pm, and on Sundays at 6 pm and 8 pm.  “We hope this performance schedule will give our audiences the most convenient options to see this world premiere,” explains Mark A. Rhea, Keegan’s artistic director.

Keegan Theatre produced Jenkinson’s STELLA MORGAN last season and the artistic staff had the chance to meet the playwright, who came to the States to see the show.

“It was an honor to have Rosemary see STELLA MORGAN, and we couldn’t be more pleased that she allowed Keegan the first chance to produce BASRA BOY.  This is a great script by one of Ireland’s most exciting playwrights. Rosemary’s voice is like no other – and to introduce Josh to our audiences in a piece like this is also very exciting. There are many reasons not to miss BASRA BOY, and we hope it gets the attention it deserves.”
