West By God Tour

The First Annual KeeganConnects Tour

The West Virginia tour of the Keegan Theatre’s world premiere of WEST BY GOD

In September 2019, the Keegan Theatre will produce the world premiere of WEST BY GOD by Keegan company member Brandon McCoy as its season opener in Washington, DC. With sponsorship support, McCoy’s bold new play will travel to the Appalachia region of West Virginia as part of Keegan’s first annual KeeganConnects Tour.

WEST BY GOD by Brandon McCoy, directed by Jeremy Skidmore

Support of the WEST BY GOD tour – in the form of artist or production sponsorships – will underwrite the direct costs of employing local theatre artists and travel expenses for the two-week tour, which is also being supported by Marshall University. Tax-deductible contributions will also ensure that KeeganConnects can continue to tour premiere plays around the country each year.

About the Play

WEST BY GOD is a story about home. In a small town in the Appalachia region of West Virginia, two different families grapple with issues of grief and love, memory and identity, and with the distance and time that both unite and divide generations. A new play by West Virginia native Brandon McCoy, WEST BY GOD is a funny, heartwarming, and gut-wrenchingly honest examination of the divide between urban and rural America, and the kinds of prejudice and intolerance too often left unchallenged. About the Tour

The KeeganConnects WEST BY GOD tour of West Virginia will bring a socially important play to a region with a burgeoning arts scene, bolstering the local artistic community and engaging audience members in both DC and Appalachia in a critical dialogue about perception and humanity.

Following its DC premiere, WEST BY GOD will travel to West Virginia as the pilot project in the KeeganConnects tour. In January 2020, the play will be staged at Marshall University in Huntington over two weekends, with audience talkbacks and community engagement events offered in collaboration with other local theatres and non-profit organizations. Playwright Brandon McCoy and select cast members will conduct theatre workshops and community outreach events throughout the run. The tour cast will include a Marshall University student, who will also be awarded a residency fellowship at Keegan in fall 2019.

The KeeganConnects tour of WEST BY GOD opens a new chapter in Keegan’s long history of touring important works outside the DC region. An annual project designed to take original, provocative plays to small towns and communities nationwide, the annual KeeganConnects tour will include affordable productions, theatre and audience engagement events that will forge connections between the District’s thriving theatre community and smaller professional and community theatres around the country.
