Since its founding in 1996, The Keegan Theatre has presented 171 powerful productions of classic and modern plays and musicals in an intimate 120-seat theater space, building a reputation as a producer of some of D.C.’s most exciting work and earning 26 Helen Hayes Awards and 131 nominations. Keegan’s mission is to take audiences to the vital heart of the theater experience: extraordinary artists in an intimate setting exploring the human condition. Keegan seeks to foster connections and positive change in our community through vigorous, inclusive, empowering education and outreach. In 2013, Keegan purchased our Dupont Circle home and modernized the building through a major renovation. In 2014, we launched PLAY-RAH-KA (PRK), our education program serving students with limited access to in-school arts programming. In 2017, we launched the Boiler Room Series (BRS) to support and amplify emerging playwrights from traditionally underrepresented populations. And in 2018, we created KeeganConnects to ensure access and inclusion on the audience side. Each of these programs grew directly from what the community told us it needed and each has expanded as that need has grown.
Thirty years in, the results are measurable, the programs are bigger, the partnerships deeper, and the community needs clearer than ever. What makes this moment different from the previous twenty-nine years is that what we’ve spent decades building is now producing outcomes that compound: productions drawing first-time audiences at record levels, a playwright development program with national reach, an education program whose demand outstrips our capacity, and a community access initiative that is measurably changing who walks through our doors.
But it is a difficult time to grow. Mid-sized theaters, which carry outsized community responsibility without the budget cushion of large institutions or the lean agility of small ones, are bearing the greatest strain of the current moment in American theater. Earned income remains below pre-pandemic levels industry-wide, and the withdrawal of federal arts funding has created new pressure across the field. Keegan sits squarely in that tier, and we feel that pressure. Against that backdrop, Keegan's trajectory is up – but trajectory is not the same as capacity. What determines whether this moment becomes a foundation for the next thirty years or a ceiling is whether the investment matches the opportunity. That is what your support makes possible.
