** 2020 HELEN HAYES NOMINEE **
** 2019 CHARM CITY FRINGE WINNER “BEST OF FRINGE” **
FROM GUMBO TO MUMBO features a New Orleanian science teacher turned rhyme speaker (Drew Anderson) and a dreadlock-rocking Southeast DC b-boy (Dwayne Lawson-Brown) who together conjure a dynamic cauldron of hip hop, poetry, and theatre. They dig into what it means to be authentic, question the culture and politics of today, and ultimately celebrate love and the search for home. Nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for its world premiere at Keegan in DC and named “Best of Fringe” at the Charm City Fringe Festival in Baltimore, this fall’s production of FROM GUMBO TO MUMBO is directed by Duane Richards II and features new material that responds to our modern moment and resonates with a worldwide audience.
DC Theatre Scene Review
“The tangy DC streets or a soulful bowl of NOLA. From Gumbo to Mumbo celebrates each from its first notes — for what writers and performers Drew Anderson and Dwayne Lawson-Brown do is something just shy of sing. “
Broadway World Review
“To pull this off is a tremendous feat, especially in our current climate, but its ability to do so in a way that communicates reverence, frustration, and hope is what makes From Gumbo to Mumbo absolutely artful.”
DC Metro Theatre Arts Review
“The closest thing I’ve seen so far to theater as we remember it avant le deluge…Under the skillful direction of Duane Richards II, [Anderson and Lawson-Brown] give voice to some of the finest poetry you will hear on a stage.”
