Join us for the matinee of LIZZIE on Sunday, November 16th and stay for a vital post-show conversation with special guests Sara Matthiesen, associate professor of history and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at George Washington University, and Matthew Riemer, a Ph.D. student researching the production and use of queer history, among other related topics. In this moderated discussion, our guests will discuss the suspected queer identity of Lizzie Borden and expand on broader examples of how female and queer histories are so often erased. Learn more about the rewriting of these stories, and understand why these histories still matter today. Free to all patrons!
Sara Matthiesen is associate professor of history and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at George Washington University. Her first book, Reproduction Reconceived: Family Making and the Limits of Choice after Roe v. Wade (2021), tells the history of family-making under state neglect to trace how mass incarceration, for-profit, racist health care, HIV/AIDS, parentage laws, and faith-based services extracted new forms of reproductive labor from families on the economic, racial, and sexual margins of society. It received the 2022 Sara A. Whaley Prize from the National Women’s Studies Association. Her current project, "'Free Abortion on Demand!' After Roe" is a history of multiracial, feminist organizing against state and medical control of abortion during the era of choice.
Matthew Riemer is a Ph.D. student in the American Studies department. He received his B.A. in History from Middlebury College and his J.D. from University of Chicago. In 2016, while a practicing attorney, Matthew's extracurricular interest in queer history led him to co-create a popular online history resource (Instagram's @lgbt_history), and he later co-wrote We Are Everywhere: Protest, Power, and Pride in the History of Queer Liberation (Ten Speed Press/Penguin Random House, 2019). His research is on the production and use of queer history in the U.S.; tensions between radical queer resistance and neoliberal reformists; and the material realities of marginalized subcommunities subsumed by the monolithic politics of the "LGBTQ community."
