The newly-renovated Keegan Theatre is a beautiful space that will undoubtedly have a long creative future … Dogfight is a beautiful story, well-told and beautifully sung.
I readily praise this year’s Dogfight as I did last year’s Hair—it is radiant and thrilling; its depiction of love is exuberantly hopeful. Plus the music is wonderfully sung, and the direction and staging are superb. Keegan’s Dogfight is a smashing good show.
A tour de force … Bravos are in order for Co-Directors Christina A. Coakley and Michael Innocenti … For an emotional, exciting and mature evening of theatre, do not miss this exceptional production of Dogfight!
Christina A. Coakley and Michael Innocenti have staged a gentle but moving production of the musical Dogfight in its beautifully renovated space, centering on a luminous performance by Isabelle Smelkinson.
Musical director and keyboardist Jake Null anchors a small, flexible orchestra … These songs are wonderful, especially a number with Rose and Birdlace tentatively singing nervous “bum-bum-bums” that flutter on top of an infectious, hopeful melody. Give Keegan credit, too, for choosing the piece, since the lucky timing gives Washington an impromptu festival.
With a smartly written book by Peter Duchan and memorable songs by Pasek and Paul, this award-winning show provides emotional impact as deep as Evan Hansen’s, but with a much more affordable price tag.
Christina Coakley and Michael Innocenti are directing the Washington premiere of the musical “Dogfight” and then getting married Sept. 5 — on that same stage.
The Tony-nominated composing team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have been the talk of DC of late, getting oodles of attention for the buzz-worthy Dear Evan Hansen, playing Arena Stage, before heading to New York’s Second Stage theatre next spring.
Another of the duo’s shows is heading to our area this month with Keegan’s staging of their 2012 musical, Dogfight (book by Peter Duchan) from Aug. 22 to Sept. 19, which coincidentally had its Off-Broadway debut at Second Stage.
