Though we’d seen the play once before, we had forgotten how full-on funny the script is. It also gives you some interesting things to think about: Do individuals, or groups and movements, have more significant long-term impact? What were the major themes of the twentieth century? Is art more moving than science? A lot of laughs with something to talk about after make for a worthwhile play any night.

Like the popular E.L. Doctorow novel, Ragtime, the Keegan Theatre’s whimsical and bouncy new production of Steve Martin’s play Picasso at the Lapin Agile is an intricate, quasi-historical journey as seen through the prism of historical figures (Einstein and Picasso in this instance — with a surprise contemporary guest from the future and numerous references to Matisse) at the dawning of a new age of creativity and vision.

One of the many pleasures of Picasso at the Lapine Agile, now playing at the charmingly cozy Keegan Theatre in Dupont Circle, is allowing us a glimpse into the earlier years of two true geniuses – Pablo Picasso (Matthew Keenan) and Albert Einstein (Bradley Foster Smith). Both men are depicted whittling away an evening in a sleepy Paris bar circa 1903, where they regale a Greek chorus of regulars with their outsized ambitions and grandiose plans for defining the contours of the 20th century.
