When I walked out of Outside Mullingar—directed by Producing Artistic Director Mark A. Rhea with what seemed inspired grace—I knew that I had just seen Keegan at its best.
John Patrick Shanley’s play is part family drama, part romantic comedy with an Irish twist. No matter how you slice it, it’s exceedingly charming and down-to-earth.
Keegan’s production gives the play its full measure, never condescending to these flawed characters, thus making them sympathetic and the story charming.
OUTSIDE MULLINGAR is a jewel of a play, best displayed in the intimacy of a theater like Keegan … a lyrical, heart-wrenching, and ultimately joyous tribute to those who stayed behind, tending the land that they loved,
It’s vintage Shanley; the characters hold nothing back. Moonstruck savages might be a fair description of Shanley’s misfit romantics, and you’ll find yourself grinning as Keegan’s quartet adeptly taps the flinty, winsome style.
